マサチューセッツ州のピッツフィールドに生まれたバンクスは、高校卒業後にペンシルベニア大学へ進学・卒業。後に女優としての活動を始めて1998年に低予算映画でデビュー。その後、サム・ライミ監督の『スパイダーマン』やスティーヴン・スピルバーグ監督の『キャッチ・ミー・イフ・ユー・キャン』などの話題作に次々と出演。女優としてのキャリアを順調に築いていく。主に主役を支える妻やガールフレンド、その他知的で聡明な優しい女性を演じたり、コメディ映画などではコミカルな演技も披露している。
